
Winnie Wang is a Toronto-based writer, film programmer and cultural worker. Their writing has appeared in Cinema Scope, Los Angeles Review of Books, Documentary Magazine, Little White Lies and POV. Previously, they have held positions at TIFF, Hot Docs and CBC.
Winnie is interested in feminist and experimental works of film, documentary and literature, food culture, and environmental thought. They hold a B.Sc. in neuroscience and a M.A. in cinema studies from the University of Toronto.
Most recently, Winnie was the industry programmer at Hot Docs, where they managed grants, programmed the festival conference, and led delegation trips. They have introduced films and hosted Q&As for the monthly screening series MDFF Selects, moderated talks for Getting Real and Reel Asian, and served as a panelist at the Australian International Documentary Conference and Mulan International Film Festival.
Winnie was the recipient of the International Documentary Association's 2022 Getting Real Fellowship and the Toronto Film Critics' Association’s 2024 Emerging Critic Award.
In their spare time, Winnie curates films for Insomniac Film Festival and Future of Film Showcase. They occasionally build websites, like this one. You can usually find them in Cinema 4 at the TIFF Lightbox.
